Artist in Residence at Thornton W. Burgess

I am writing to provide you with an evaluation of the Enchanted Circle Theater partnership that was funded by WHAT this year. To say that it was a success would be an understatement! I will walk. you through some of the highlights of this exciting event.

It all began in February with a performance of ECT's professional touring theater company entitled, ''Tales from Mother Russia." Grades 4,5 and 6 enjoyed, "The Tsar's Feast," and, "Ivan Bearmanovich," plays that incorporated themes of respect, kindness and good versus evil. It was a great way to kick of our partnership!

Two days later, the Artist in Residence program began. Jeannine Haas of Enchanted Circle Theater spent 16 days in the 6th grade Language Arts classes. Students excitedly brainstormed ideas, conducted research, and began to formulate how their scripts would take shape. Plays were written and rehearsed. Costumes were designed. Set backdrops were created. The 6th grade hallway was a very busy place! At various times I would stop in for a visit and see small groups in the hallway rehearsing lines, students meeting with Jeannine to refine a script or boys and girls feverishly reading books, hoping to add more authenticity to their performance.

Parents played a large role in this experience as well. Their involvement was crucial at various points in the process. Over the course of just two days, costumes and set backdrops were created. Moms, dads, grandmothers and grandfathers contributed their talents. It was a wonderful way to bring in family members who may otherwise hesitate to get involved. I have enclosed several pictures of this part of the production that I hope will give you a better sense of the fun - and learning - that occurred.

And learn they did! Students were able to access, process and interpret information and express the knowledge they acquired in a creative manner. The integration of language arts, history, art and music enabled the students to greater embed what was learned.

Students developed self-discipline through the study of theater arts, and supported each other in the creative process.

All of this hard work culminated in two events: one performance for our 4th and 5th grades during the school day and an evening performance for the community. It was a ''full house" at the community event, and our younger students enjoyed the show immensely. Dr. Gagliarducci and Dr. Scanlon were in the audience as well. The joy and pride that these students felt will never be forgotten.

On the last day of Jeannine's time with us, students presented her with cards of thanks. I spoke with many of the students, and heard nothing but positive feedback. Our School Council recently sent home a parent survey, and this partnership was mentioned by many of the 6th grade parents as a wonderful, meaningful opportunity for their children.

On behalf of everyone here at Thornton Burgess, I would like to thank the Wilbraham Hampden Academic Trust for providing the funding for this partnership. Without you, this incredible experience would never have been possible. You have enriched many lives!

Sincerely,

Cheryl Clarke
