Q: I haven’t heard of w.h.a.t. Is it new?
A: w.h.a.t. was incorporated in July of 2003. It is a tax exempt corporation, completely separate from the school system, conceived by a group of concerned and community-minded citizens who wanted to develop an organization that could provide funds for educational enrichment opportunities for the children of Hampden and Wilbraham.
Q: What kinds of programs will be funded?
A: After reviewing grant applications, primarily from teachers, the Board of Directors of w.h.a.t. will select the most promising proposals for vital enrichment and educational improvement activities and programs. It is expected that the grants will support programs ranging from those relative to single classrooms to some that will benefit several schools at once.
Q: Who will benefit from these funds?
A: First and foremost it will be the students who benefit from the improvement and enrichment of their educational experience, but as a result of a strong and vibrant school system, the centerpiece of our local society, all the citizens of Wilbraham and Hampden will ultimately benefit.
Q: How is w.h.a.t. structured?
A: Through its Nominating Committee, the Board of Directors of w.h.a.t. identifies and elects Directors to serve one year terms on the Board. The Board is committed to maintaining significant representation from both Hampden and Wilbraham.
Q: I have heard that foundations like this only distribute money after several years. Will w.h.a.t. hold my donation or use it now?
A: Some funds will be saved to allow the foundation to grow over the years, but unlike a number of educational foundations, w.h.a.t. will use a substantial proportion of current donations to fund programs and activities in the schools right away!
Q: Sounds like a great idea. How can I help ?
A: There are several ways to help support the work of w.h.a.t.
- The most common method is to send a check. Other gifts may include stocks, securities, or deferred gifts such as bequests, charitable trusts, term trusts, and gift annuities.
- As a non-profit corporation, w.h.a.t. qualifies for corporate giving and employer matching programs. Check with your employer.
- w.h.a.t.always welcomes willing and eager volunteers.
Q: Are my contributions tax deductible?
A: Yes, as with donations to any non-profit organization, contributions may be tax deductible for federal income, estate, state, and gift tax purposes. Check with your accountant or tax attorney.
