Important Past w.h.a.t. Dates and Events

September 2005--Fore!! w.h.a.t., the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament, at Hampden Country Club is successful in raising funds to support education in the district schools.

August 2005--w.h.a.t. announces grants awarded for programs and activities during the 2005-2006 school year.

April 3, 2005--2nd Annual w.h.a.t. Spelling Bee is a huge success.  The Spellin’ Bees  take first place, again, in an event that raises more than $4000 to support educational enrichment.

January 2005--w.h.a.t. announces grant awards for programs in the schools of the district

November 20, 2004--2nd Annual Fall Dinner/Dance is held at the Wilbraham Country Club.  162 attendees celebrate w.h.a.t.’s successful first year, donate $8,100

September 24, 2004--Fore w.h.a.t.!, 1st annual Golf Tournament is held at Hampden Country Club.  Ninety golfers, corporate and individual sponsors donate $15,000 to w.h.a.t.

June 11, 2004--w.h.a.t. Board of Directors announces grant awards for programs beginning in the Fall of 2004.

May 15, 2004--”Spring Fling” Dinner Dance held at The Hampden Country Club.  Proceeds, including those from the successful silent auction, add to w.h.a.t. ‘s funds available for grants.

March 27, 2004--First annual w.h.a.t. Spelling Bee, held at the Wilbraham Middle School, raises over $7000 to benefit w.h.a.t. The event is sponsored by The Wilbraham Hampden Times and multiple other regional businesses and is hosted by Channel 22’s Brian Lapis. Twenty-one teams compete in six rounds of scholarly action.  “The Spellin’ Bees” win first place and capture the District Trophy, awarded annually to the school-based team placing highest in the competition, by correctly spelling euphonius.  Team members Mary “Queen Bee” Gardner, Ellen “Spellin’ Ellen” Muse, and Gina Kahn, all MRHS faculty, vow to repeat their impressive performance at next year’s Bee or banish themselves to a remote seapoose.

December 31, 2003--w.h.a.t. receives $15,000 donation from the estate of Robert H. Bohlke.  Creates annual Bohlke Grant

December 23, 2003--w.h.a.t. Board announces grants awarded for Second Semester

November 21, 2003--Grant application deadline for Second Semester Grants. Board begins deliberations on applications.

November 15, 2003--Kick-off Dinner Dance celebrates the formation of w.h.a.t.

October 28, 2003--w.h.a.t. announces donation from Wilbraham-Hampden Welcome Wagon

October 9, 2003--w.h.a.t. launches direct mail fund raising campaign

September 4, 2003--w.h.a.t. receives advance ruling from IRS confirming tax-exempt status as a public charity

July 17, 2003--w.h.a.t. files with the IRS to obtain tax-exempt status

July 2, 2003--Incorporation of w.h.a.t. is formally recognized by the Secretary of the Commonwealth

June 24, 2003--w.h.a.t. Board members make a presentation to the HWRSD School Committee

June 17, 2003--w.h.a.t. adopts by-laws and files with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a non-profit corporation

February-June, 2003--Several members of the initial convocation meet and actively pursue the formation of w.h.a.t.

February 3, 2003--At the request of Dr. Paul Gagliarducci a group of concerned citizens meet to discuss the possibility of forming an educational foundation
